Light, Warmth and Life. Eki by SKLD Studio Brings Sun to the Contract Outdoor Sector
Outdoor furniture that stands the test of time while maintaining a strong visual identity is no longer a contradiction. Designer Silvia Ceñal presents Eki, a collection created for SKLD Studio that combines comfort, originality and functionality for modern bistros, restaurants and hotels.
In Euskera, the language of Spain’s Basque Country where Silvia Ceñal was born, Eki means “sun” — a symbol of light, warmth and vitality. Inspired by this life-giving energy, the new Eki collection transforms outdoor spaces into inviting environments where design naturally connects with its surroundings.
“The brief from SKLD Studio was clear,” explains Ceñal. “The contract sector needed an outdoor collection that goes beyond mere functionality. We wanted pieces with personality that can withstand intensive everyday use. Many outdoor collections focus on durability at the expense of design — or the opposite. Eki is about achieving that delicate balance: furniture built to last without sacrificing memorable aesthetics.”
A defining feature of the collection is its distinctive enveloping curve, bringing both ergonomic comfort and visual fluidity. In seating, the curve gently embraces the user, while tables feature sculptural structures that break away from conventional design.
“Perfecting the curve was a demanding process,” Ceñal adds. “We tested multiple prototypes to find the exact radius that ensures genuine comfort while remaining suitable for industrial production.”
The thoughtful combination of a lightweight aluminium frame with teak slats of varying widths introduces a dynamic visual rhythm while enhancing ventilation and enabling quick drying after rain — key qualities for high-traffic outdoor environments.
Designed primarily for hospitality terraces, the Eki collection consists of three core pieces, each developed in two versions to meet the practical demands of the contract sector.
The chair is the collection’s centrepiece. Its tubular aluminium structure doubles as a functional armrest without adding visual weight, while the embracing curve ensures lasting comfort during long social gatherings. Tables and bar stools follow the same philosophy, delivering distinctive design that performs reliably day after day.
“These subtle design decisions are what separate attractive furniture from pieces that truly work in everyday life,” says Ceñal.

Eki combines a robust aluminium frame — available in White Wash and Carbon Matte finishes — with warm teak wood to create a refined balance between durability, warmth and visual lightness. The teak slats not only enhance the aesthetic with a lively, slightly unconventional rhythm but also ensure essential airflow and fast moisture evaporation.
For added versatility, the backrests of armchairs and stools can also feature rope weaving, allowing designers to tailor the aesthetic character of each project while maintaining functional excellence.
Carefully selected premium materials ensure the collection withstands demanding outdoor conditions while retaining its contemporary elegance over time. Sustainability also plays a key role: aluminium and teak are long-lasting materials that age gracefully, preserving their character even after years of exposure.
